In this uncertain economy, most everyone is on a tight budget. But a tight budget does not necessarily mean we have to forgo those planned home renovation projects we hoped to accomplish this year. We can still spruce up our living spaces on a tight budget with a little paint, lighting and DIY ingenuity.

If your home renovation plans had included new kitchen cabinetry or a custom millwork but your tight budget won't permit it this year, why not paint your existing kitchen cabinetry for a fresh and modern look? A fresh paint color combined with new cabinet hardware will update your kitchen without breaking a tight budget.

Adding some inexpensive lighting under the cabinets will brighten up an outdated kitchen. New pendulum lights over an existing kitchen island or other decorative lighting over a table or recessed lighting over kitchen work area will instantly update a kitchen. New, inexpensive lighting that you purchase now for home renovation while on a tight budget can be always be re-purposed should you go with a full kitchen renovation later on when finances improve.

If your bedroom is looking dated and drab, paint and lighting can come to the rescue again. The bed is the focal point of the bedroom, so you want to make stand out. Create a dramatic background for your bed by just painting the largest wall of your bedroom and placing your bed against that wall. If your bed does not have a headboard, recycle by shopping at thrift stores or flea markets for the perfect shaped headboard and paint it in a complimentary or contrasting color to the wall you have painted. Add a couple of lamps or pendulum lighting on each side of the bed and a few vibrant colored pillows to the bed and you'll have an inexpensive bedroom renovation.

A home renovation project for the living room can start at thrift stores or flea markets, places where you can stretch a tight budget. Living rooms are just that, the room in which we live, and it should reflect our personalities while being comfortable. A tight budget may not allow for all new living room furniture, but recycled and re-purposed furniture can update the look and feel of a living room. For example:

  • A dining table with the legs sawed down to the appropriate height can become an interesting coffee table, or
  • A small chest of drawers can become a side table, an armoire can be recycled into an entertainment center.

Don't be afraid to paint your furniture finds to compliment your home decor, or buy a vintage chair and reupholster it and add a new or vintage lamp to round out your home renovation in the living room.

Bathrooms can be updated on a tight budget by updating the faucets and cabinet hardware. A new shower curtain and decorative towels will update the look at minimal cost. A new wall paint color and lighting can make a dingy bathroom look bright and newly renovated.

Don't forget about your home's entry way when doing a home renovation on a tight budget. Paint your front door in a bold color. Paint hand rails and mailbox, paint or re-cover porch furniture. Add a new outside light fixture, a new door knob, new large house numbers and attractive flower pot, if space and tight budget will permit.

Home renovation on a tight budget is possible with DIY ingenuity and a little paint.
